Andaz Liverpool Street London: Re-defining Luxury

FoyerLast year saw the launch of Andaz (formerly the Great Eastern Hotel).

The hotel is first in a series to launch globally under the new Andaz brand operated by Hyatt Hotels and Resorts, and fuses the best of contemporary boutique culture, with the systems and services of a respected global operator.

Heralding a new era in hospitality, the hotels ethos is that of “Casual Luxury”, a mind set amplified by the implementation of innovations never before observed in hotels.  These innovations are at the heart of what makes Andaz different.  The luxury five star hotel experience has now been redefined, as operating procedures are simplified, and new service model delivers a more straightforward approach.

Andaz is taken from the Hindi language meaning ‘Personal Style’. This sense of personality is evident throughout the hotel.  New operating systems are introduced with a view to developing stronger guest/staff relations.  This philosophy empowers guests to define their own hotel experience, and live it with much the same freedoms they have at home. Central to the new offering are the following principles;

People, service is attentive, whilst subtle and uncomplicated:

• Physical barriers between staff and guests have been removed in main “welcoming areas”. No front desk at check-in and No restaurant reception desks at arrival.

• “Living Room Principals” greet guests.  There will be No separate concierge, receptionist or luggage porter.  Instead there is one contact  - your “Principal”.

• The lobby “Living Room” replaces the traditional reception.  A flexible and simplified method is applied as guests are checked-in via Tablet PC`s, either on route to the guest room, or on arrival in the Living Room.

• Traditional hierarchy removed.  All members of staff are guest serving, and without title, from General Manager to Waiter.

Queen DoublePricing is transparent and uniform:

• Inclusive in the room rate are breakfast, internet, healthy minibar, local telephone calls, laundry item and unlimited movies.

Product is innovative while straightforward:

• Andaz Liverpool Street is eco-aware. Toilets use 80% less water, a computer controlled boiler reduces 25% fuel use, intelligent lighting systems used in guest rooms, eco printers used throughout, air miles a major consideration in sourcing food and beverage, infra red detection in public toilet lighting and fair trade purchasing policy implemented.

• Unexpected detail exists around the building.  Historic architecture sits alongside modern design.

• The “Andaz Residence” is London’s latest private dining experience. Guests choose menu combinations from any of the hotels five restaurants, which specialise in sushi, fine dining and seafood to bistro or hearty pub fair. With private entrance and a dynamic open kitchen it’s conception is unique to the Square Mile.

Each Andaz develops cultural and design cues from the local area.  The hotels attitude, as much as product, is tailored towards what each guest responds to.

Cultural interventions include:

• Bespoke monthly East End Contemporary Art tours from the hotel.  Local and hard to find galleries and studios are uncovered by guides who are practicing artists.

• Local characters and personalities have submitted iPod play lists.  The individuals have been selected for local relevance over celebrity. The local Policeman, Lawyer, Banker, Publican, Fashion designer, Artist, Architect, Hairdresser. The selections appear on loan iPods from the Living Room.

• The hotel is a lynch pin between Corporate and Creative East London.  Regular Comedy (Sabotage) and Literary (B-Club) events have played host to the likes of Stephen Merchant, Stuart Lee, Will Self, Nick Hornby and Alexi Sayle.

• A new art collection is developing along guest corridors.  Works by local, up coming artists include Petro Chrisostomou and Martina Schmuecker and curated by local art collective Exhibit-K.

• Local creatives have come together to apply East End relevant quotations to the spaces of Andaz Liverpool Street under the title of “Eastern Thinking”.  Contributors include Peter Newman, Danny Sangra and Joss McKinley
