Ardanaiseig Hotel, Scotland
Overlooking the gently rippling waters of Loch Awe, Ardanaiseig is one of Scotland’s most wildly romantic hotels. The 19th century Scottish baronial manor, reached by a long winding single track road, is filled with homely character and unusual antiques, and offers total seclusion with luxury country house comforts, an excellent restaurant and plenty of space to explore whether by boat, bike or on foot.
Owned by antique impresario, Bennie Gray, the man who created the first undercover antique markets in London, Grays Antiques, the hotel is filled with an eclectic mix of old and new artworks, furnishings and drapery. The 17 bedrooms are designed by a Glasgow-based Broadway set designer, with bold colour schemes, and regular special deliveries from London means there is always some exciting new addition. The most sought-after room in the hotel is the recently converted Boat Shed, a one-bedroom suite two minutes’ walk from the hotel. Offering romantic seclusion in a striking contemporary retreat on the water’s edge, it is decked out in stylish 1960s Italian boudoir style and has breathtaking floor-to-ceiling views of the loch.
The restaurant, which serves a five-course gourmet menu every evening, is renowned for its creativity with local fish, game and other wild produce including chanterelle mushrooms from the woods on the estate. Both Chef de Cuisine Gary Goldie and the restaurant have won several awards for the excellent cuisine. More unusual artwork and soft candlelight create a refined atmosphere in the dining room, with well-spaced tables allowing for privacy and intimacy over dinner as well as full appreciation of the views across the manicured gardens to the loch. Gourmet picnics can be arranged for boat trips or those taking to the hills for a day's walking.
Surrounded by hills, including a number of Munros, water and quiet country roads, energetic guests are spoilt for choice with excellent walking, fishing, boating and cycling all available on the doorstep. There is also an abundance of wildlife and the garden itself has over 100 different species of trees. Oban and the ferry to Mull are only a short drive away, and it possible to visit the island for the day.
