How Much Are Footballers Worth?

How Much Are Footballers Worth?

Tuesday 17 July 2012

Real Madrid’s goalkeeper, Iker Casillas, insures his hands. Comedian, Ken Dodd, insured his buck teeth. And R&B superstar, Jennifer Lopez, insured her bottom for a reported £18,000,000. It seems we all must secure the part that earns us our living. However, amateur footballers who are still a far cry from the secure £50,000 a week pay-cheques, are being inadequately insured by their county football associations. Without a portfolio of properties and product endorsements to fall back on, these grassroots players could lose their entire livelihood if they get severely injured out on the field.

Currently, the FA’s national policy is being offered to County FA’s at the low price of a mere £18 per club per season. This option barely covers the players, entitling them to no compensation should the worst occur. There is an alternative package, at £39 per season, which offers a vital £25,000 compensation. However, with county FA’s scraping by having not yet hit the big time, most are choosing the inadequate cheaper package, endangering their players’ futures.

Manchester sports injury lawyer, Paul Mulderrig, notes the increasingly frequent incidence of such misfortune:

“Sadly, I have dealt with more than 25 cases in recent years of players who find themselves in just that position. All of them should have received a minimum of £25,000 in compensation but in fact ended up with nothing.”

What county FA’s may not know however, is that their coverage shortcomings could earn them a future lawsuit. Should it be discovered that the left their player unprotected when there was an alternative option, they run the risk of being held liable for the inadequate protection.

Mulderrig launched the campaign for the FA to introduce a national insurance policy in 2006, but urges county FA’s to be responsible and opt for the more expensive, though more inclusive, package. It could save them far more money by avoiding being sued in the long run.

“Everyone involved in the sport knows that each season a certain number of players will go out on a Saturday morning and end up in hospital – we just don’t know who they are or whether they were adequately covered by the people who were supposed to be looking after them.”
