20% cut off pc fee income taken by Law Society

16 June, 2008

In a report released today, the Law Society, the representative body for solicitors, announced that it cut the amount it takes from the Practising Certificate fee income by 20% in 2007/8.

Compared with £155 in 2006 the Law Society took £122 in 2007/08 year, a decrease of 20%.  The PC fee in 2006/7 was £1020 and in 2007/8 it was reduced to £950.

Des Hudson, Law Society Chief Executive, says:

"This report highlights significant progress that the Law Society has made in the last 12 months.  We must be a lean, fit organisation to survive the twenty first century and beyond.  The Society is more efficient than it has ever been, through a combination of structural rationalisation and revenue generation.  Cutting our pc fee take is just one example of how we are achieving our main clear objective which is to support solicitors in every step of their careers.

Next year I aim to drive the organisation into improving its value for money to its members even further and increase the relevance of the services we offer.  Building on the success of this year's reduction of pc fee income taken by the Society I want to reduce that further so that, at some point in the near future, we will no longer depend on the PC fee income.

I want to lead the Law Society  into a position where our status and influence with government and other stakeholders is even higher.  I will prove to every lawyer in England and Wales that the Law Society is the only representative body they need for practical support throughout their careers and to be the leading voice on the business of law."
