Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008)

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist looks like any other teen romantic comedy. There’s the blonde and skinny girl; the guitar playing boy pining over his ex; and the cool and streetwise brunette. But the similarity ends here. The anonymous high school  is replaced by New York City. The shopping malls are replaced by clubs and bars. And the soundtrack ranges from Billy Joel to We Are Scientists, admittedly with a little Spice Girls thrown in.

It’s not just the backdrop and music, the acting succeeds too. Michael Cera (Nick) of Juno fame and Kat Dennings (Norah) engage as the two leads while they go from club to bar to find the latest gig of ‘Where’s Fluffy?’ alongside drunken friends, band mates and a radio. And it is the tongue in cheek attitude which makes this film watchable. OK, there are some cheesy lines but they are delivered with knowing tones and they still make you feel warm inside just the same.
