Law firms’ regulator to give keynote address

Law firms’ regulator to give keynote address

Major reforms affecting the legal profession will be highlighted in a keynote speech by Peter Williamson, chair of the Solicitors Regulation Authority, at a national conference.

Mr Williamson, a past president of the Law Society, will address the annual conference of the Solicitors Group of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England Wales (ICAEW) in April. He will outline the impact of the sweeping changes arising from the Legal Services Act, including new-style law firms with non-lawyers as owners and partners.

Janet Marton, chair of the ICAEW Solicitors Group, said: “These are extremely challenging times for the legal profession and for the accountants providing strategic business advice to their law firm clients. The Legal Services Act will provide opportunities for chartered accountants, whether they are employed by legal firms or advising them.

“Non-lawyer managers, including chartered accountants, will be able to become partners in Legal Disciplinary Practices within 18 months. For those advising law firms, understanding the full implications of the Legal Services Act and the opportunities and challenges it presents is critical to providing timely and valuable advice.”

Supported by Lloyds TSB Commercial, this year’s event will again be held in two locations. The Renaissance London Heathrow Hotel is the venue on April 22, followed by the Radisson SAS Hotel, Manchester Airport, on April 24.

Chris Marston, head of solicitors’ banking for Lloyds TSB Commercial, said: “Law firms are facing a lot of challenges at the moment, but despite these challenges, well-managed legal businesses whose owners think strategically and seek out good advice from their accountants and their bankers can still do well.”

The conference will also hear from Richard Collins, the Legal Services Commission’s director of policy, on the effect of the wide-ranging reforms in the legal aid system.

Other speakers are: Andrew Otterburn of Otterburn Legal Consulting; Chris Marston, head of solicitors’ banking, Lloyds TSB Commercial; John Hilton, practice director, Thring Townsend Lee & Pembertons; Steve Carter, senior partner, GLF Carter Richards, and George Bull, head of tax, Baker Tilly.

The event is open to non-ICAEW delegates. To book online visit www.icaew.com/sgconference08 and for more information, call 01908 248 159 or email msdevents@icaew.com
